Overview
An Achilles rupture is a complete tear of the tendon, usually during sudden push-off in sport. It is often felt as a snap with sudden weakness. Both surgical and non-surgical pathways exist, followed by a structured rehabilitation programme.
Symptoms
- A sudden snap or pain at the back of the ankle
- Difficulty pushing off or rising on toes
- Swelling and a possible gap in the tendon
- Weakness in the calf
Causes
- Sudden explosive push-off
- Tendon degeneration with age
- Certain medications increasing risk
Treatment
- Prompt assessment and immobilisation
- Surgical or non-surgical management as advised
- Structured, progressive rehabilitation
- Gradual return to running and sport
