Overview
Cervical spondylosis is the age-related degeneration of the neck's joints and discs. It is very common and often symptom-free, but can cause neck stiffness, ache and occasionally nerve symptoms. Exercise and movement variety are the cornerstone of management.
Symptoms
- Neck stiffness, often worse in the morning
- Aching that increases with sustained postures
- Grinding or clicking with movement
- Occasional headaches or arm symptoms
Causes
- Normal age-related joint and disc wear
- Cumulative postural loading
- Genetic predisposition
Treatment
- Reassurance and education
- Neck mobility and strengthening exercise
- Posture and ergonomic advice
- Manual therapy as an adjunct
