Cervical radiculopathy

Arm pain, tingling or weakness caused by irritation of a nerve root in the neck.

Overview

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve root in the neck is compressed or irritated, often by a disc herniation or degenerative narrowing. Symptoms follow the nerve into the arm and may include pain, altered sensation and weakness.

Symptoms

Pain radiating from the neck into the arm
Pins and needles or numbness in the hand
Weakness in specific arm or hand muscles
Symptoms eased by resting the arm on the head

Causes

Cervical disc herniation
Degenerative foraminal narrowing
Inflammation around the nerve root

Treatment

Pain management and education early on
Nerve mobility and graded loading
Progressive strengthening of the neck and shoulder
Specialist referral for progressive weakness
