Costochondritis

Overview

Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breastbone, causing localised chest-wall pain. It is usually benign and self-limiting, but chest pain should always be assessed to exclude more serious causes.

Symptoms

• Localised pain at the front of the chest
• Tenderness when pressing on the affected ribs
• Pain worse with deep breathing or twisting
• Pain reproduced by movement, not exertion

Causes

• Repetitive strain or minor trauma
• A recent respiratory illness with coughing
• Unaccustomed upper-body activity

Treatment

• Reassurance once serious causes are excluded
• Activity modification and pain relief
• Gentle mobility as symptoms allow
• Time - most cases settle gradually
