Cubital tunnel syndrome

Overview

Cubital tunnel syndrome is compression of the ulnar nerve as it passes behind the inner elbow, causing tingling in the ring and little fingers. Symptoms often worsen with a bent elbow. Most cases improve with activity changes and nerve care.

Symptoms

• Tingling or numbness in the ring and little fingers
• Symptoms worse with the elbow bent
• Aching at the inner elbow
• Hand weakness in longstanding cases

Causes

• Prolonged or repetitive elbow bending
• Leaning on the elbow
• Direct pressure on the nerve

Treatment

• Avoiding prolonged elbow flexion and pressure
• Night positioning or splinting
• Nerve mobility exercise
• Surgical opinion for severe or progressive cases
