Degenerative disc disease
Age-related changes in the spinal discs that can contribute to back pain and stiffness.
Overview
Degenerative disc disease describes the normal age-related drying and thinning of the spinal discs. It is extremely common and often painless, but in some people it contributes to back pain and stiffness. An active, graded approach keeps the spine strong and mobile.
Symptoms
- Background ache and stiffness in the lower back
- Flare-ups with heavy or unaccustomed loading
- Stiffness after rest that eases with movement
- Sometimes referred symptoms into the buttock
Causes
- Normal age-related disc changes
- Genetic predisposition
- Cumulative loading over time
Treatment
- Reassurance - degeneration is normal and not damage
- Graded exercise and progressive loading
- General activity and weight management
- Pain relief during flare-ups
