Distal biceps tendinopathy

Overload of the biceps tendon where it attaches near the elbow.

Overview

Distal biceps tendinopathy is irritation of the biceps tendon at its attachment near the elbow, causing front-of-elbow pain with lifting and gripping. It responds to load management and graded strengthening.

Symptoms

  • Pain at the front of the elbow
  • Discomfort with lifting and gripping
  • Tenderness over the tendon attachment
  • Pain with resisted elbow bending or rotation

Causes

  • Repetitive lifting and pulling
  • Sudden increases in load
  • Age-related tendon change

Treatment

  • Load management and graded strengthening
  • Activity modification
  • Pain management as needed
  • Specialist review if a rupture is suspected
