Iliotibial band syndrome
Pain on the outer knee, common in runners and cyclists.
Overview
Iliotibial band syndrome causes pain on the outside of the knee, typically in runners and cyclists, from overload where the band crosses the outer knee. It responds to load management and hip and knee strengthening.
Symptoms
- Pain on the outer side of the knee
- Pain that builds during running or cycling
- Tenderness over the outer knee
- Pain worse downhill or on stairs
Causes
- Sudden increases in running or cycling load
- Hip and knee control deficits
- Training and terrain factors
Treatment
- Load management and training modification
- Hip and knee strengthening
- Gradual return to running
- Pain management as needed
