Lumbar muscle strain
An overstretch or minor tear of the muscles supporting the lower back.
Overview
A lumbar muscle strain is a common, self-limiting injury to the muscles and connective tissue of the lower back, usually after lifting, twisting or unaccustomed activity. It typically settles within a few weeks with movement and gradual return to load.
Symptoms
- Sudden onset of localised back pain
- Muscle tightness or spasm
- Pain with movement that eases with rest positions
- Tenderness over the affected muscles
Causes
- Lifting or twisting under load
- Sudden unguarded movement
- Fatigue and unaccustomed activity
Treatment
- Reassurance and early gentle movement
- Short-term pain relief and heat
- Graded return to normal activity
- Strengthening to reduce recurrence
