Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylalgia)

Pain on the inside of the elbow from overload of the wrist-flexor tendons.

Overview

Golfer's elbow is an overload condition affecting the tendons on the inner elbow. It is provoked by repetitive gripping, wrist flexion and forearm rotation, and is managed similarly to tennis elbow with progressive loading.

Symptoms

  • Pain on the inner elbow
  • Pain with gripping and wrist flexion
  • Tenderness over the inner bony point
  • Occasional forearm aching

Causes

  • Repetitive wrist flexion and gripping
  • Sudden increase in loading
  • Tendon deconditioning

Treatment

  • Load management and activity modification
  • Progressive wrist-flexor loading
  • Forearm and grip strengthening
  • Bracing or injection as adjuncts
