Exercise-related pain along the inner shin, common in runners.
Overview
Medial tibial stress syndrome, often called shin splints, is exercise-related pain along the inner shin bone from overload. It is common with increases in running and responds to load management and strengthening, with imaging if a stress fracture is suspected.
Symptoms
- Aching along the inner shin
- Pain at the start of exercise that may ease then return
- Tenderness along the inner shin bone
- Pain worse with increased running
Causes
- Sudden increases in running load
- Footwear and surface factors
- Foot and lower-limb mechanics
Treatment
- Load management and training modification
- Calf and foot strengthening
- Footwear review
- Imaging if a stress fracture is suspected
