Olecranon bursitis

Swelling of the fluid-filled sac at the tip of the elbow.

Overview

Olecranon bursitis is inflammation of the bursa over the point of the elbow, causing a soft swelling. It can follow pressure, trauma or, less often, infection. Most cases settle with protection and time.

Symptoms

  • Soft swelling over the tip of the elbow
  • Tenderness when leaning on the elbow
  • Sometimes warmth and redness
  • Limited comfortable elbow bending if large

Causes

  • Repeated pressure or leaning on the elbow
  • A blow to the elbow
  • Infection or inflammatory conditions in some cases

Treatment

  • Protecting the elbow from pressure
  • Activity modification and pain relief
  • Aspiration if large or persistent
  • Antibiotics or drainage if infected
