Olecranon bursitis
Swelling of the fluid-filled sac at the tip of the elbow.
Overview
Olecranon bursitis is inflammation of the bursa over the point of the elbow, causing a soft swelling. It can follow pressure, trauma or, less often, infection. Most cases settle with protection and time.
Symptoms
- Soft swelling over the tip of the elbow
- Tenderness when leaning on the elbow
- Sometimes warmth and redness
- Limited comfortable elbow bending if large
Causes
- Repeated pressure or leaning on the elbow
- A blow to the elbow
- Infection or inflammatory conditions in some cases
Treatment
- Protecting the elbow from pressure
- Activity modification and pain relief
- Aspiration if large or persistent
- Antibiotics or drainage if infected
