Overview
Osgood-Schlatter disease is a common cause of knee pain in growing, active adolescents, from traction at the growth area below the kneecap. It is self-limiting and managed with load management and strengthening.
Symptoms
- Pain and a bump below the kneecap
- Pain with running, jumping and kneeling
- Tenderness over the growth area
- Symptoms that ease with rest
Causes
- Rapid growth combined with sport
- Repetitive jumping and running
- Traction at the growth plate
Treatment
- Load management and activity pacing
- Quadriceps and lower-limb strengthening
- Reassurance about the self-limiting course
- Pain management during flares
