Osteitis pubis
Overload-related pain at the front of the pelvis where the pubic bones meet.
Overview
Osteitis pubis is a chronic overload condition of the joint at the front of the pelvis, common in kicking and running athletes. It causes central groin pain and responds to load management and progressive rehabilitation.
Symptoms
- Central groin or lower-abdominal pain
- Pain with running, kicking and changing direction
- Tenderness over the pubic joint
- Pain with sit-ups or squeezing the legs
Causes
- Repetitive kicking and running loads
- Muscle imbalance around the pelvis
- Sudden increases in training
Treatment
- Load management and relative rest
- Progressive trunk, hip and adductor strengthening
- Gradual return to sport
- Pain management as needed
