Peroneal tendinopathy
Overload of the tendons on the outer side of the ankle.
Overview
Peroneal tendinopathy is irritation of the tendons running behind the outer ankle bone, causing outer-ankle pain with activity. It is common after ankle sprains and responds to load management and strengthening.
Symptoms
- Pain behind and below the outer ankle bone
- Pain with activity and pushing off
- Swelling along the tendons
- A sense of ankle instability in some cases
Causes
- Previous ankle sprains
- Sudden increases in load
- Foot and ankle mechanics
Treatment
- Load management and graded strengthening
- Balance and control work
- Footwear and orthoses where helpful
- Activity modification
