Prepatellar bursitis

Overview

Prepatellar bursitis is inflammation of the bursa in front of the kneecap, often from repetitive kneeling (sometimes called housemaid's knee). Most cases settle with protection and activity modification.

Symptoms

• Soft swelling over the front of the kneecap
• Tenderness with kneeling and pressure
• Sometimes warmth and redness
• Limited comfortable bending if large

Causes

• Repeated or prolonged kneeling
• A direct blow to the kneecap
• Infection in some cases

Treatment

• Avoiding kneeling and pressure
• Activity modification and pain relief
• Aspiration for large or persistent swelling
• Antibiotics or drainage if infected
