Quadriceps tendinopathy
Overload of the tendon above the kneecap.
Overview
Quadriceps tendinopathy is irritation of the tendon just above the kneecap, causing pain with loading such as squatting and jumping. Like other tendinopathies, it responds to progressive loading.
Symptoms
- Pain just above the kneecap
- Pain with squatting, jumping and stairs
- Stiffness at the start of activity
- Tenderness over the tendon
Causes
- High or rapidly increased loading
- Jumping and squatting sports
- Strength deficits
Treatment
- Progressive tendon loading
- Training and load management
- Addressing strength deficits
- Patience with the loading programme
