Rib joint dysfunction
Pain from the joints where the ribs meet the spine or breastbone.
Overview
Rib joint dysfunction is pain arising from the costovertebral or costosternal joints. It can cause sharp, localised pain that is provoked by deep breathing, twisting or specific movements, and usually settles with mobility work and time.
Symptoms
- Sharp, localised pain along a rib
- Pain worse with deep breathing or twisting
- Tenderness over the rib joint
- Discomfort lying on the affected side
Causes
- Sudden twisting or reaching
- Coughing or unaccustomed activity
- Postural overload of the thoracic spine
Treatment
- Thoracic and rib mobility exercise
- Breathing and posture work
- Manual therapy as an adjunct
- Activity modification while it settles
