Scapular dyskinesis
Altered movement or control of the shoulder blade affecting shoulder function.
Overview
Scapular dyskinesis describes altered position or movement of the shoulder blade. It is often a contributor to shoulder pain rather than a stand-alone diagnosis, and improves with strengthening and movement retraining.
Symptoms
- Aching around the shoulder blade
- Fatigue with overhead activity
- Visible winging or abnormal shoulder-blade movement
- Associated shoulder pain
Causes
- Muscle imbalance and weakness
- Poor movement habits
- Pain-related changes in muscle control
Treatment
- Scapular strengthening and control exercise
- Posture and movement retraining
- Addressing the primary shoulder problem
- Graded return to overhead activity
