Scheuermann's disease
A developmental condition causing increased rounding of the upper back in adolescence.
Overview
Scheuermann's disease is a growth-related condition where the thoracic vertebrae develop a wedge shape, increasing the forward curve of the upper back. It typically appears in adolescence and is managed with exercise and, in larger curves, bracing.
Symptoms
- Increased rounding of the upper back
- Aching in the mid-back, worse with activity
- Stiffness of the thoracic spine
- Fatigue with prolonged upright postures
Causes
- Growth-related wedging of the vertebrae
- Genetic predisposition
- Rapid adolescent growth
Treatment
- Postural and extension-based exercise
- Thoracic mobility and strengthening
- Bracing for larger progressing curves
- Surgical opinion for severe curves
