Scoliosis

A sideways curvature of the spine that can be structural or functional.

Overview

Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine. Many curves are mild and require only monitoring, while larger curves may need bracing or, rarely, surgery. Exercise helps maintain mobility, strength and posture awareness.

Symptoms

  • Visible asymmetry of the shoulders, waist or ribs
  • Uneven posture or clothing fit
  • Back fatigue with prolonged positions
  • Usually painless in adolescents

Causes

  • Idiopathic (most common, cause unknown)
  • Congenital vertebral differences
  • Neuromuscular conditions

Treatment

  • Monitoring for curve progression
  • Scoliosis-specific exercise
  • Bracing for moderate progressing curves
  • Surgical opinion for severe curves
