Overview
Sever's disease is a common cause of heel pain in growing, active children, from irritation at the heel's growth area. It is self-limiting and managed with load management, heel support and calf strengthening.
Symptoms
- Heel pain with running and jumping
- Tenderness at the back of the heel
- Limping after sport
- Pain that eases with rest
Causes
- Rapid growth combined with sport
- Repetitive running and jumping
- Tight calf muscles
Treatment
- Load management and activity pacing
- Heel cups and supportive footwear
- Calf stretching and strengthening
- Reassurance about the self-limiting course
