Sternoclavicular joint sprain
Injury to the joint where the collarbone meets the breastbone.
Overview
A sternoclavicular sprain is injury to the joint connecting the collarbone to the breastbone, usually from a fall or impact. It causes pain and swelling at the front of the chest near the throat. Most are managed conservatively.
Symptoms
- Pain and swelling at the base of the throat
- Pain with shoulder and arm movement
- Tenderness over the joint
- A visible bump in some cases
Causes
- A fall onto the shoulder
- A direct blow to the chest
- Sporting collisions
Treatment
- Relative rest and pain management
- Graded shoulder movement
- Strengthening as it settles
- Urgent review for posterior dislocation (rare but serious)
