Tarsal tunnel syndrome
Compression of a nerve on the inner side of the ankle.
Overview
Tarsal tunnel syndrome is compression of the tibial nerve as it passes behind the inner ankle, causing burning, tingling or numbness in the foot. It is the foot's equivalent of carpal tunnel syndrome and responds to addressing the cause.
Symptoms
- Burning or tingling in the sole of the foot
- Numbness in the foot
- Symptoms worse with standing and walking
- Pain behind the inner ankle
Causes
- Swelling or space-occupying lesions near the nerve
- Foot mechanics and flat feet
- Previous ankle injury
Treatment
- Orthoses and footwear changes
- Nerve mobility and activity modification
- Addressing contributing causes
- Injection or surgery for persistent cases
