Thoracic disc herniation

A relatively uncommon disc bulge in the mid-back that can cause band-like pain.

Overview

Thoracic disc herniation is less common than in the neck or low back. It can cause mid-back pain and sometimes band-like symptoms around the chest. Most cases are managed conservatively, with referral if neurological signs appear.

Symptoms

  • Mid-back pain, sometimes radiating around the chest
  • Band-like discomfort following a rib line
  • Stiffness of the thoracic spine
  • Rarely, leg symptoms or balance changes

Causes

  • Age-related disc changes
  • Trauma or heavy loading
  • Repetitive thoracic strain

Treatment

  • Education and pain management
  • Graded thoracic mobility and strengthening
  • Activity modification
  • Specialist referral for neurological signs
