Thoracic facet syndrome
Mid-back pain arising from the small facet joints of the thoracic spine.
Overview
Thoracic facet syndrome describes pain from the facet joints of the mid-back. Pain is often localised between the shoulder blades, worse with rotation or sustained postures, and responds well to mobility and strengthening.
Symptoms
- Localised mid-back pain, often one-sided
- Pain with rotation or sustained sitting
- Stiffness between the shoulder blades
- Discomfort with deep breathing in some cases
Causes
- Sustained desk or driving postures
- Repetitive rotation loading
- Degenerative change in the facet joints
Treatment
- Thoracic mobility exercise
- Postural variety and ergonomic advice
- Manual therapy as an adjunct
- Strengthening of the mid-back and shoulder girdle
