Tibialis posterior dysfunction
Weakness or overload of the tendon that supports the foot's arch.
Overview
Tibialis posterior dysfunction affects the key tendon supporting the inner foot arch. When it fails to function well, the arch can flatten and the foot roll inward, causing inner-ankle and foot pain. Early loading and orthoses are important.
Symptoms
- Pain along the inner ankle and arch
- A flattening foot arch over time
- Difficulty rising on the toes on one leg
- Swelling along the inner ankle
Causes
- Tendon overload and degeneration
- Foot mechanics and higher body weight
- Age-related tendon change
Treatment
- Orthoses and supportive footwear
- Progressive calf and foot strengthening
- Load management
- Surgical opinion for advanced cases
