Triceps tendinopathy
Overload of the triceps tendon at the back of the elbow.
Overview
Triceps tendinopathy is irritation of the triceps tendon at the point of the elbow, causing pain with pushing and straightening the arm under load. It is common in throwing and pressing athletes and responds to graded loading.
Symptoms
- Pain at the back of the elbow
- Discomfort with pushing or pressing
- Tenderness over the tendon
- Pain with resisted elbow straightening
Causes
- Repetitive pressing or throwing
- Sudden increases in training load
- Age-related tendon change
Treatment
- Load management and graded strengthening
- Technique and training modification
- Pain management as needed
- Gradual return to loading
