Trochanteric bursitis

Pain over the outer hip, often part of greater trochanteric pain syndrome.

Overview

Trochanteric bursitis describes pain over the bony point of the outer hip. It is usually part of greater trochanteric pain syndrome, which more often involves the gluteal tendons than a truly inflamed bursa. Load management and strengthening are key.

Causes

  • Gluteal tendon overload

Treatment

  • Gluteal strengthening
  • Activity modification
  • Injection in selected stubborn cases
