Wrist sprain
An overstretch or partial tear of the ligaments supporting the wrist.
Overview
A wrist sprain is a ligament injury, usually after a fall onto the hand. Most are minor and settle with protection and graded loading, but persistent pain warrants assessment to exclude a more significant ligament or bone injury.
Symptoms
- Wrist pain after a fall or twist
- Swelling and tenderness
- Pain with weight-bearing or gripping
- Reduced wrist movement
Causes
- A fall onto an outstretched hand
- Sudden twisting of the wrist
- Sporting impacts
Treatment
- Early protection and pain management
- Graded movement and loading
- Wrist strengthening as it settles
- Imaging if pain persists to exclude fracture or ligament tear
