Patellofemoral pain syndrome

Pain at the front of the knee, around or behind the kneecap.

Overview

Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a common cause of anterior knee pain, felt around or behind the kneecap. It is aggravated by stairs, squatting and prolonged sitting, and responds well to graded strengthening of the hip and knee.

Symptoms

  • Pain around or behind the kneecap
  • Pain with stairs, squatting or kneeling
  • Discomfort after prolonged sitting
  • Occasional grinding sensation

Causes

  • Training load changes
  • Hip and quadriceps weakness
  • Altered movement patterns

Treatment

  • Load management and activity modification
  • Hip and quadriceps strengthening
  • Movement retraining
  • Taping or bracing as adjuncts
