Handgrip Strength Test
Purpose
Isometric grip dynamometry measured with calibrated equipment and a standardized position.
Equipment
Calibrated grip dynamometer
Protocol
Use a chosen standardized position, handle setting, cue and alternating trial schedule; record each hand separately and report the maximum per hand. A common Southampton variant uses three trials per hand.
Interpretation
Higher kg reading indicates greater dynamometer-recorded grip force. Norms must consider age, sex, device and measurement protocol.
Safety
Avoid when gripping contraindicated or acutely painful; document device, position and units.
