Single-Leg Stance Test

Purpose

Measures duration of unsupported one-leg standing under a specified condition.

Equipment

Stopwatch, stable surface

Protocol

Record limb and eyes-open/closed condition, arm placement, trial duration cap, and contact/termination criteria. Start when the other foot lifts; stop when criterion is broken or cap reached.

Interpretation

Longer time within the same variant suggests greater measured static balance capacity; a capped result is censored, not an exact maximum ability.

Safety

Guard to prevent falls; do not combine eyes-open and eyes-closed scores.
